At
the end of the regular school day, K-1 students are picked up directly
from their classrooms by our Kidz Klub staff and are taken to the Kidz
Klub
room, 107. Attendance is taken and a healthy snack and beverage is
offered. Kidz Klub is this age group’s home base and is available at all times. A wide variety of activities is offered in this small, quiet and safe setting. K-1 children attending Special Classes or activities will always have an escort from Kidz Klub to their activity group and back to Kidz Klub. It is especially important for parents of kindergarten children and 1st graders to let our staff know if your child will not be attending a regularly scheduled day. ** Kidz Klub is where you will pick up your K-1 child at the end of each day ** |

Music (Bruce) The after-school music workshop is an extension of the classes taught during the school day, but with a little something extra… Kids get to work in a more challenging environment, dealing with more intricate music concepts or arranging parts for their day classes. In the after-school music workshop, kids are offered the chance to be more creative by writing and/or arranging their own musical ideas. Bruce Mack, our resident PS 3 music specialist, was the subject of the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival’s “When Fried Eggs Fly,” a documentary about his environmental music project with PS 3 2nd and 3rd grade students and parents. Clay Works (Lenny) Children learn to manipulate clay using hands, rolling pins and other implements. Projects are glazed and fired right here in our art room. Projects include cups, plates, vases, pinch pots, stamps and more. All clay projects are painted, glazed and baked in one of our two clay room kilns. Story Telling & Drawing (Lenny) Lenny starts this class by telling stories and reading picture books. Students are then encouraged to draw pictures about those stories or/and create pictures for their own stories. Advanced Drawing (Lenny) Portfolio drawing – students are encouraged to build a portfolio of their art work. Children learn drawing techniques to enhance their art projects (i.e. shading, portions, and blending, drawing shapes within common items to create complex pictures.) Lenny is an artist in his own right and also our PS3 clay teacher. Lenny wants to help 3-5 graders build a portfolio of their drawings. Arts & Crafts (William & Sabrina) Children are assisted with weekly art projects (for example holiday cards, painting, necklace and craft making.) William has been with PS3 ‘til 6 for over a year now and really enjoys making art projects. Children in Sabrina’s class will use a variety of common items (beads, wooden sticks, paints, etc.) to make creative art projects. Knit & Stitch (Regula) The goals of this class include picking projects that teach a variety of knitting, crocheting, hand-sewing, weaving, cross-stitching and macramé techniques. The level of the student determines the final piece. Students work with yarn, thread, felt, fabric, leather, buttons, zippers, ribbons and beads. Some projects for the younger grades (K-2) include finger knitting a necklace, sewing a tooth-fairy bag, creating a pompom, weaving a bookmark, using “Knitting Nancy” and a first attempt at knitting a square. Some projects for the older grades (3-5) include knitting a bag (knit, pearl); sewing an “ugly-doll,” pillow or a needle-book; crocheting a hat or a pouch and weaving a cover for a binder or folder. Regula is a very involved parent here at PS3. Computers (Ruby) Afterschool computer class gives students a chance to work in smaller groups and /or one-to-one with the teacher on a variety of projects: Garageband songs, iMovies, and animations. Students also have a chance to work on problem-solving I Spy software or visit websites like discoverykids.com and make simple machines. News to Print (Kim) Students in this class will create a newspaper from conception through distribution. This includes layout, selecting and writing stories, editing and publication. Kim is a PS3 parent, and is studying creative writing at the New School. Japanese Culture (Kazuko) Learn basic Japanese words (i.e. greeting, colors, animals, songs, etc.), Japanese culture origami, calligraphy and Japanese toys. If possible students will learn to read Japanese signs and words. Kazuko is a parent at PS3 who enjoys sharing her culture with students in a fun filled atmosphere. Intro to French (Trouzia) The goal of this class is to give students an introduction to the French language, including greetings, days for the week, colors, counting, games and songs. Science (Caroline) Caroline, our very own PS3 science teacher, provides our students with an introduction to science via fun and hands-on experiments. Logic Games (Dina) Dina teaches advanced mathematics to college students. She shares with children grades 3-5 fun ways to build their strategic thinking and math skills, in a non competitive environment, by playing “mind” games. Cooking (Jodi) This class will offer children a unique and fun learning experience with food. Kids will be able to learn basic cooking techniques, kitchen safety, and how to follow recipe directions. They will also learn how to help the grown-ups in the kitchen, and even teach them a few things! This course is also taught by one of our own PS3 teachers. |

Dress-Up and Make Believe (Denize) Devoted to our youngest actors, this beginning acting class encourages children to explore their talent and creativity in the world of Make-Believe and Dramatic Play. Specific emphasis is placed on the child’s imagination, the key to acting. Ensemble work, verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as learning to play beginning acting objectives such as “Who am I?” and “What do I want?” will be incorporated in this beginning character and scene work class. Costumes, masks and make-up add to the fun and serve as a wonderful way to introduce young children to the world of theater. Imagination Workshop (Denize) This class is geared for the young actor and is centered around improvisation. Open-ended improvisational scenes provided by the instructor or created by the kids focus on exploring the idea of character, environment, the actor’s objective and the situation at hand. Students in this class will be able to investigate all of these aspects and discuss what they discovered afterwards. Theatre Games (Denize) This game-based class offers many avenues to express creativity and build self-esteem. In addition to being fun, the Theater Games class is designed to sharpen listening skills, concentration, and help develop spontaneity. Students must be in the moment when playing a game, and not anticipate when dealing with a problem at hand. Problem solving, creative expression, communication and teamwork are encouraged - all very important keys to acting. Puppet Theatre (Denize) Children will make simple puppets (sock, stick, paper bag, etc.) and bring them to life in original puppet plays. Using puppets that we will make and design our selves, students will create various characters from their imaginations including super heroes and villains that can fly, leap, and have super powers? We will also create Animals, Birds, Sea Creatures, Monsters, Dragons, Queens and Kings A. Fantasy Circus, and anything else that the children care to come up with. Students will be using their voices, sound effects and music to tell each story. This class will be a wonderful mix of visual arts and dramatic arts designed to stimulate your child's creativity. Young Actors (Denize) This class is for the young actor who would like to have fun learning the craft of acting while creating a series of short plays to be performed at the end of the semester for family and friends. “Young Actor's 'will focus on creating characters, story ideas and plot. Each class will begin with a group warm-up, followed by an individual acting exercise. The class will then be divided into groups to create scenes based on an “acting challenge.” Costumes, music and props help students explore their creativity in the world of theater. Story Theater (Denize) Story Theater will be combination of the arts. Writing, Art and Drama. Children will be encouraged to explore their creativity by writing, illustrating and dramatizing their favorite tales. Students will have fun sharing favorite stories from books, as well as writing their own short stories individually and as a group through improv. In addition to creating original storybooks and plays, we will stage some of our favorites in class working towards a performance at the end of the session for family and friends |
