Kidz Klub (K-1 Graders)
|
||
|
At
the end of the regular school day, K-1 students are picked up directly
from their classrooms by our KidzKlub staff and escorted to KidzKlub,
Room 101. Attendance is taken and a healthy snack is
offered. [NOTE:
children who have food allergies
should bring their own snack]
KidzKlub is this age group’s home base and is available at all times. A wide variety of activities is offered in this small, quiet and safe setting. K-1 children attending Special Classes will always have an escort from KidzKlub to their activity group and back to KidzKlub. ** KidzKlub is where you will pick up your K-1 child at the end of each day ** VERY IMPORTANT Your child must be picked up by 6pm. At 6:01pm Late Pick Up Fees of 1.00 per minute go into effect. This policy is STRICKLY ENFORCED. |

| Rec & Sports (2-5 Graders) | ||
| The
older students walk down to the Auditorium with their classmates and
teacher at 3:10pm. Once in the auditorium, the teacher will ask those
students attending the Afterschool Program that day to walk down to the
cafeteria. Once they get to the cafeteria, Afterschool Staff take attendance and offer children a healthy snack. Afterwards, students are called to their respective activities -- scheduled at 3:40 and again at 4:45. [NOTE: children who have food allergies should bring their own snack] Children enrolled in the Basic Program will join recreational activities and games and a variety of Team Sports led by experienced coaches. From 5:45 to 6:00 pm, all 2nd – 5th graders gather in the cafeteria again where they wait until they are picked up. VERY IMPORTANT Your child must be picked up by 6pm. At 6:01pm Late Pick Up Fees of 1.00 per minute go into effect. This policy is STRICKLY ENFORCED. |

| Archery (Judith) The fundamentals of archery, i.e., range rules, measuring draw length for the archer, how to size the bow and arrow and basic safety skills. Tournaments and contests at the end of each semester. More targets this semester... less wait time! Fencing (Angelica & Larissa) In partnership with the New Amsterdam Fencing Academy Students learn the basics and more, and have fun playing the Olympic sport of speed, agility, and strategy! Classes are grouped into Beginner and Intermediate to accommodate different levels. Gymnastics (Maurice) Children learn the basic body shapes necessary to acquire gymnastic skills. As the course progresses, students are introduced to the balance beam and the bar. Emphasis is placed on safety and on the value of exercise and patience. Older students concentrate on developing form, strength and flexibility. Kidnastics (Maurice) An energy burning class for our younger students consisting of gymnastics, athletics, movement and creative group games. New equipment coming this Fall! Kung Fu (Maurice) This popular class helps students build confidence, fitness and self-discipline. Rec & Sports (Staff) Starting this Fall, the Basic Program will offer a variety of team sports including basketball, flash-ball, volleyball and football. Sport activities rotate throughout the term. Coaches will divide students into age-appropriate teams and organize games and tournaments. Soccer (Mike) In association with Downtown United Soccer Club, one of NYC's leading soccer organizations. Children will learn the fundamental technical skills of soccer with an emphasis on fun, creative play. Older students who have had soccer training the past year(s) will be divided according to skill level. Table Tennis (Ben / Ernesto) In partnership with the American Youth Table Tennis Organization Professional coaches from this Award Winning Program teach children how to loop, spin, smash and serve. A great opportunity to learn a new sport from some of the best coaches in the Northeast! Yogamotion (Salvador) Children develop body awareness, mind awareness, strength, and flexibility in this nurturing and fun class. Students learn different poses and pose sequences, breathing and relaxation techniques while participating in fun-filled games and projects with a yogic theme. |

VISUAL ARTS & CRAFTS |

| ClayWorks (Lenny) Students learn to manipulate clay using hands, rolling pins and other implements. Projects are glazed and fired right here in our art room. Projects include cups, plates, vases, pinch pots, stamps and more. All clay projects are painted, glazed and baked in one of our two clay room kilns. Comic Book Creation (Tim) Join the fun of comic world. Imagination a must! In this class children will be doing a lot of drawing. The course will be broken down into different sections, each section lasting a few weeks, working through character and story development, pencilled drafts and final product. Students will focus first on comedy -- comics or “funnies". Then they will turn to other genres, including action, horror, drama and autobiography. The last portion of the semester will be a hand-drawn animation workshop. Tim is an artist working primarily in drawing and sculpture and has been a cartoonist for several years. He's been teaching art classes for several years. Cooking & Nutrition - New Chefs this Fall! In association with the City Harvest Education and Nutrition Program Basic culinary skills, nutrition and healthy eating habits! Learn how to handle kitchen utensils, compare the nutritiuous value of different foods, measure different ingredients and enjoy your own tasty treats at the end of each session. All cooking classes will be led by experienced chefs who are passionate about fresh foods, green markets, local gardening and composting, and teaching children how to make good choices. They bring a wealth of experience and creativity to our program. Crazy Creatures (Tracy) - NEW this Fall! Do you like furry animals or creepy critters?! In this class children will make all kinds of creatures, from fuzzy bears to vampire bats, from lions & tigers to frogs & spiders. Some will even be scary monsters! We will use different materials, from clay to fabric, cardboard, paper, paint, wire, raffia, plastic etc. Some will be puppets, some will be masks. If you love animals & making stuff, this is the class for you. Fashion Design (Regula) - NEW this Fall! Transform old clothes and other recyclables into new exciting creations! Learn how to change, enhance, and embellish vintage clothing to create your own style. Knit&Stitch with a creative twist! Regula is an artist and former PS 3 parent. Over the years, she has led numerous workshops and fund-raising initiatives involving the design and production of colorful and creative crafts. FiberArts & Crafts (Regula) - NEW this Fall! Create art works from a variety of fibers, including yarn, thread, paper, wood and plants. Learn how to knit, weave, sew, and use a variety of textiles. Materials include leather, weaving, beads and paper-maché. Fun projects for multiple uses! Lego-Building (Makkeda) Let your imagination run wild and play away with our supply of Legos! Project-based building activities for different age groups. This class offers creative challenges for all grades. ScrapBooking (Johnny) - NEW this Fall! Use photos, memories and more to explore your family heritage, celebrate special events & favorite people in a fun and original book of your own! Textile Design & Print-Making (Tracy) - NEW this Fall! Design & make our own prints, both on fabric & on paper. Learn how repeat patterns work & how to potato-print, stencil & tie dye. Design & make your own t-shirt using one of these techniques. If you love fashion & color & pattern you'll love this class! Tracy Wingrove has a BA (Hons) Arts Degree and works as a Decorative Painter & Set Designer in NYC. She has taught at several private and public schools in NYC and Art Schools in the UK. Tracy is currently writing and illustrating a childrens' book. WoodWorks (Johnny) Bring ideas to life in this class! Woodworking provides an excellent opportunity for both girls and boys to create objects of their choice. Learn how to build a doll house, a miniature amusement park, a bird house, a jewelry box, a picture frame, rubberband cars, themed mobiles, etc. Working individually or in small groups students will design a blueprint first which is then integrated into their project. Once the project is completed they will have the chance to decorate and paint their newly created piece(s). A creative feast! |

| Chess & Board Games (Matt) Learn how to outsmart your foe with clever opening moves and a tough middle game. Through chess, students learn concentration, logical thought, planning, pattern recognition, self-discipline, and taking responsibility for their own mistakes. Students will be introduced to other traditional board games like checkers and backgammon. Lego Robotics (Morgen) The perfect workshop for young tech wizards! Have fun programming your own robot. Create the smartest, strongest LEGO robot with MINDSTORMS robotic toys. This class stimulates creativity, problem-solving and team-working skills. Morgen, a practicing architect, is a student in the Interactive Technology Program at NYU. With a passionate interest in all forms of technology, from buildings to airships to rocketships, he is especially interested in the manner in which this technology extends our physical bodies far out into the world around us. Lego has been his favorite toy for as long as he can remember, and with the development of their more advanced systems, he has found that it is now also a great prototyping tool for dreaming up all kinds of mechanisms. Science Workshop (LaTia)- NEW this Fall! Hands-on, creative science projects. Students will be introduced to different topics through fun experiments and activities that build on their interests and natural curiosity. LaTia is a biology graduate from Rutgers University and loves teaching science to young kids. |

| Alvin
Ailey Dance Program - NEW this Fall! The Alvin Ailey teaching artists are experienced professionals who love to work with children and love what they do. We will offer a Creative Movement class for grades K-2 and a Jazz/Hip Hop workshop for the higher grades. Part of our package agreement includes discounted tickets to PS3 families for an Alvin Ailey Matinee in December. Animal Tales (Denize) Beginner’s multi-media acting class (acting, writing, dance and music) devoted to our favorite four-legged friends. Children will explore their creativity while making up short original scenes and plays based on the animal world as inspiration. Students will act out animal stories from books as well as make their own animal picture books, animal puppets, puppet plays and animal dances with masks. Children will create their own original animal ears and tails and make up. If your child is an animal lover, this is the class for them! Denize Kazan is the director of Children’s Acting Space Tribeca (C.A.S.T.), a brand new theater designed specifically for children. She was the director of The Soho Children’s Acting studio for the past 18 years. In addition to teaching, Denize is also a theatrical manager and works directly with several children’s agents in NYC to help kids who have the talent and the interest pursue a professional acting career. She has taught acting at Playwright’s Horizon’s school and The Henry Street Settlement, as well as several public and private schools in the city. Dress-Up and Make Believe (Denize) Devoted to our youngest actors, this beginning acting class encourages children to explore their talent and creativity in the world of Make-Believe and Dramatic Play. Specific emphasis is placed on the child’s imagination, the key to acting. Ensemble work, verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as learning to play beginning acting objectives such as “Who am I?” and “What do I want?” will be incorporated in this beginning character and scene work class. Costumes, masks and make-up add to the fun and serve as a wonderful way to introduce young children to the world of theater. Music Workshop (Bruce) The afterschool music workshop is an extension of the classes taught during the school day, but with a little something extra. Kids get to work in a more challenging environment, deal with more intricate music concepts and/or arrange their own musical ideas. And for the first time this year, they will also have the chance to create - and play with - their own instruments. Bruce Mack, our resident PS 3 music specialist, was the subject of the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival’s “When Fried Eggs Fly,” a documentary about his environmental music project with PS 3 2nd and 3rd grade students and parents. Rhythm & Sound (Bill & Ben) - NEW this Fall! Students interested in music and percussion are encouraged to join this new workshop! The first part of the semester, led by PS 3 parent and veteran drummer/musician Bill Gerstell, will explore rhythm and percussion movements. Ben Manley, a PS3 Alumn parent, will lead the second part. Ben is a concert sound engineer and electronic music composer. His workshop will combine listening, talking about, creating, and recording music. StoryBook Theater (Denize) StoryBook class combines Writing, Art and Drama. Children are encouraged to explore their creativity by writing, illustrating and dramatizing their favorite tales. Students will have fun sharing favorite stories from books, as well as writing their own short stories individually and as a group through improv. In addition to creating original storybooks and plays, we will stage some of our favorites in class working towards a performance at the end of the session for family and friends. TADA! Youth Theatre For 25 years, TADA! Youth Theater has been producing original musicals for children performances! In TADA!'s Workshops, led by a music director and a director/choreographer, students learn the music, dance and theater skills needed to become musical theater actors. Classes include vocal exercises, acting games, stretching and dance. Music is drawn from TADA!'s repertoire of over 30 original musicals written expressly for children performances. Through TADA!'s high-quality training, children gain confidence and learn commitment, responsibility, communication and teamwork - skills that are critical to their success in school and in life. |
