Robin Burchill Though I was
born in Illinois and raised in upstate New York, my
hometown is now Manhattan and has been since 1985 when I moved here
after college. Back in those days, rents were cheap allowing for a post
grad to explore a few careers options and finally hone in on the world
of film post-production. I’ve worked as a film and video editor for the
past 17 years. My other interests include photography and a possible
career shift toward web design.I met my husband, Bill Gerstel, in 1992 and thus began the chain of events that would result in the birth of our lovely son, Sawyer in 2000. We enjoy and appreciate all the great aspects of this city that make raising a child here so enriching, not the least of which is the diversity of our public schools. We discovered PS3 through our friend and teacher Cynthia W. I was sold on PS3 while we took a school tour and was greatly impressed by, among other things, a display of a class project on Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s emphasis on hands-on, art and project based education and dedication to each child’s individual style of learning convinced us that PS3 was the school for us. I say us, because Sawyer isn’t the only one receiving an education at PS3. Through our participation in the school community, Bill and I have both learned so much from our fellow parents and the staff here. Bill is an active and daily participant at school, starting as a class parent when our son was in kindergarten and for the last two years heading up the PTA as one of its co-presidents. My somewhat crazy work schedule allows me to spontaneously jump in and participate in class trips and day time school events when I can, but I also try to volunteer at most fundraising events and have designed and continue to maintain the PS3 website. I also try to say informed of the somewhat daunting workings of the players affecting our school from the outside – the DOE, the Mayor, the CEC and the various independent parent organizations such as the Parent Commission on School Governance and Class Size Matters. My desire to bring all this together and help develop the policies and programs that shape the learning experience at PS3 lead me to the SLT. Its inclusion of parents, teachers and staff in a small group setting appeals to me as a great way to really cut through and make a difference shaping the PS3 experience. I feel like my own style of interacting, love of debate, integrating lots of different points of views and attention to detail, makes me and the SLT a good fit. I’m hoping I have the opportunity to be a part of it next year. RETURN to SLT PAGE |
