My family’s been a part of the PS3 community for four years now: my son, Zeke, is in JoKat’s 3rd grade and my daughter, Edie, is in JJ’s K-1. Throughout that time, I’ve served on the PTA and logged countless hours volunteering as a class parent, cooking and doing projects in the classroom, at events and on committees—from Fundraising to PAC. I’m especially interested in the city politics that have so profoundly affected the school over the past few years and have spent many evenings at meetings, rallies and hearings about overcrowding, mayoral control and 75 Morton. But while I’m an advocate for public school in general, I’m passionate about PS3. My husband and I both feel incredibly lucky to be a part of such a vibrant, creative place that gives our kids more than just superior academics. We love that they are learning to be a part of a greater whole, to use their imaginations and the better parts of themselves. I’m dedicated to helping PS3 maintain its unique mission, progressive curriculum and truly special sense of community. This is why, of all the volunteering I’ve done, I’ve been most satisfied serving on the SLT, where I’ve had the opportunity to work with (and learn from) knowledgeable parents, teachers and the administration to help write the school’s curriculum plan, draft detailed responses to the Department of Education’s too often inadequate plans for our neighborhood, and brainstorm strategies for managing the very real overcrowding problems we will face next year. I look forward to working with a new group of committed parents to help PS3 thrive as we move forward.

My background is mostly in magazines. I’ve worked freelance since Edie was born, writing, editing and consulting for whatever magazine or website will have me, including InStyle, Time Out New York Kids, and Travel and Leisure Family. I helped launch both Hallmark Magazine and ESPN The Magazine, but while self-employed also helped start and run a children’s clothing line (called skelagamink, it was in all kinds of amazing stores for five years but we ultimately decided eating, paying the mortgage and seeing our kids once in awhile was more fun than working trade shows and dealing with customs). When I was still working fulltime, my jobs included chief editor of Working Mother, deputy editor at Redbook and executive editor at New Woman.
