Parent Coordinator Guidance Counselor Special Services AfterSchool Program |
Parent Coordinator In the 2003-4 school year, a new full-time Department of Education position known as Parent Coordinator was implemented citywide. Our Parent Coordinator serves as a parent advocate and as a liaison between parents and the school and between parents and the school system. To help parents find ways to become more involved with the school and with their children’s education, the Parent Coordinator holds workshops on topics of interest, such as homework or helping children cope with the pressures of standardized testing. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Guidance Counselor PS 3 is lucky to have a full-time guidance counselor. The guidance counselor has a mandated counseling caseload and also handles family crises, attendance and variances. Additional responsibilities include managing the middle-school application process, serving on the mandated pupil personnel committee, and acting as liaison to the various programs that place volunteers in the school. Parents should feel free to make an appointment to discuss any problems their children may be experiencing. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . There are inclusion (collaborative team teaching) classes, SETSS (Special Education Teacher for Support Services, formerly known as Resource Room) teachers, speech and language specialists, occupational therapists, a full-time psychologist and a part-time social worker. The various professionals work in close partnership to determine the best course of action for each student. To learn more, parents should begin by speaking to their child’s teacher. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Afterschool Programs / PS 3'til 6 Website PS 3 'til 6 is a parent-run, on-site afterschool program established in 1991. The program serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students of PS 3. It has been a great success, with a variety of classes offered for a reasonable fee. In addition to general homework help and organized play time, the program includes such classes as chess, gymnastics, theater and computer. Families who don’t want a regular after-school schedule for their children can sign up for occasional uses. The program runs Mondays through Fridays and is open on half-days. PS 3 'til 6 strives to provide an environment in which each child feels safe, respected, and encouraged to explore a variety of enjoyable and enriching activities. It is an integral part of the school community, and endorses the PS 3 Mission Statement and its founding principles. Although it is a nonprofit corporation, it maintains a very close relationship to the school community at large, reporting to the PTA at its regularly scheduled meetings. Several other local institutions, including Carmine Recreation Center, Children's Aid Society, and the Village Community School, also offer afterschool programs, and some even include transportation from PS 3 to their site. |
